My Journey at Millikin University: A Semester of Wins
This blog is part of the "Walking My Path: Celebrating Small Wins" series by Isaiah Montgomery.
Hello, my name is Isaiah Montgomery. I just finished my first semester at Millikin University. I chose Millikin because I saw opportunity there, especially as a neurodivergent person. The school’s small population and affordable tuition were significant factors in my decision. After visiting the campus in November 2023, touring the facilities, and speaking with staff and professors, I was convinced it was the right fit. The strong art program and other features solidified my choice. Reflecting on my first semester, I’ve stacked several personal and academic wins that highlight my growth and development. I want to share some of my wins from this journey.
Win #1: Making Connections During Welcome Week
One of my first victories happened within the first couple of weeks. During a social event before classes started, I found myself walking through the crowd alone. Suddenly, a couple of people approached me. We shook hands, talked, exchanged information, and ended up chatting for a good amount of time.
This was a big step for me, as socializing hasn’t always been easy. In this moment, I
remembered my mom’s encouragement about being confident. That interaction resulted in a friendship, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since.
Win #2: Academic Achievement: Almost Making the Dean’s List
Another big win was my academic performance. I came very close to making the Dean’s List, earning three A’s, one B+, and a C+. These grades were a result of hard work and the advice I’ve received from my parents, especially my mom.
In my classes, I used my improved executive functioning skills to stay on top of my work. I took detailed notes daily, visited my professors’ office hours, and asked questions whenever I was confused. Advocating for myself was something I struggled with in the past, but this semester, I embraced it. My mom’s encouragement to take charge of my learning truly paid off.
Win #3: Positive Feedback From Professors
Receiving positive feedback from professors was another win. One professor, who is also on the spectrum, praised my hard work on a business plan. He noted how close I was to earning an A on my final project, despite struggling to keep up with the demanding coursework. This professor’s words were a reminder of how far I’ve come in managing challenges and pushing through difficult moments.
Win #4: Joining the Black Student Union
A final win from my first semester was getting involved with the Black Student Union (BSU). Joining this group was a big step outside my comfort zone. Socializing, especially in large gatherings, has always been challenging for me. However, I took my mom’s advice to be brave and participated in the group chat. Over time, I built connections and communicated more freely with other members.
Being part of BSU gave me a sense of belonging and pride. It’s an accomplishment I’m particularly proud of because it represents growth in my social confidence.
Closing Thoughts
The wins I’ve achieved during my first semester at Millikin University mark my growth as a person. These experiences prove to me—and others—that I am capable of success. Each step forward builds my confidence and prepares me for the challenges ahead. I’m excited for what the future holds and the opportunities to continue growing, learning, and achieving my goals.

I’m so proud of the person you are becoming! Continue to shine and make great strides! You will do amazing things in the years to come at collage. I have no doubt you will be on the dean’s list in the near future!
So happy to see all of your accomplishments! I always felt my first semester away at school was the hardest. You are rocking it! My son struggled with not being assertive. He came into his own away at school. I look forward to future updates!
